“Crono significa tempo. Sinclastico significa incurvato dalla stessa parte in tutte le direzioni,
come la buccia di un’arancia. Infundibulum è il nome che gli antichi Romani come Giulio Cesare e Nerone davano
all’imbuto”. Una definizione necessaria per capire quello che è successo a Winston Niles Rumfoord mentre
viaggiava indisturbato nella sua navicella spaziale insieme al suo cane Kazak: entrati casualmente nel cuore di un
“infundibulum crono-sinclastico”, cane e padrone sono diventati un eccezionale fenomeno ondulatorio spazio
temporale, che fa sì che possano esistere in tutte le dimensioni dell'Universo e materializzarsi in determinati
luoghi distanti anni luce solo per alcuni minuti. Rumfoord quindi può conoscere  il passato, il presente e il futuro,
e le sue apparizioni improvvise dentro la sua mansione diventano eventi moltitudinari attesi da migliaia di persone
desiderose di assistere al fenomeno più incredibile di tutta la storia dell'umanità. Tutti contenti tranne
logicamente Beatrice, la moglie di Rumfoord, i cui contatti col marito si sono ormai ridotti alle brevi e enigmatiche
apparizioni di quest'ultimo. Le sorti dei protagonisti e dell’umanità stessa cambieranno per sempre con
l'entrata in scena di Malachi Constant, un giovane dongiovanni baciato dalla fortuna. Anche se, logicamente, tutto
ciò era stato già visto (o programmato?) in precedenza (o nel futuro immediato?) da Rumfoord...

Sirens
of Titan tells the story of the wide-ranging journey of Malachi Constant, the wealthiest man on Earth, from Earth to
Mars to Mercury, back to Earth, and finally to Titan, a moon of Saturn. Along the way, Constant is seemingly manipulated
and controlled by Winston Miles Rumfoord, an American aristocrat whose existence has been scattered across time and
space after flying into a warped region of the solar system while on a space flight to Mars. Rumfoord builds up a small
civilization on Mars and leads it into a suicidal mission to take over Earth as a prelude to introducing a new religion
on Earth that teaches that God is completely indifferent to the welfare of humankind. He uses Constant as a symbolic
figure in this faith, and humiliates his erstwhile wife, Beatrice, in a grand spectacle during which the two of them are
exiled on Titan along with...
